The Truth about the Similan Islands
The Similans is one of the top spots in the world for diving and snorkeling and it’s true!. Khao Lak, which is one hour drive from Phuket and one hour speedboat drive from the Similan Islands has had its fair share of troubles. The most traumatic was the Tsunami. I wont talk about the affect it had on people’s lives here as I feel enough has been documented about it already.
The Similan Islands it-self lost some very beautiful dives sites But they are recovering and will once again be opened to the public and be as beautiful as they were. Please don’t get me wrong. There are and will always be amazing dives and snorkeling sites to be seen here. Ko Tachai was my favorite site last season. Richelieu rock is amazing. I could go on and on about the diversity of marine life here but I’m sure you have heard about it already.
El Nino, An unusual warming of the surface of the Pacific oceans. Did affect all of the waters around the pacific oceans The Similan Islands was one of them, but not a huge amount. Ko Bons corals were affected. But to be honest. You go to Ko Bon for the mantas and there playful acrobatics under water. This is a truly spectacular experience for divers as well as for Snorkelers. As mantas like to show of in the shallow waters. Everyone gets to see the show.
