Similan Islands – Manta Rays – Whale shark
Patrik, my German open water Student was so excited to have finished his open water course. That the very next day his booked another dive with Pirate Divers. At the end of the day he would have completed six dives. First dive was at the famous feeding stations for Manta Ray – Ko Bon. The chances , I told Patrik, where slim of seeing these huge creatures but you never know ,what to expect when you are diving the Similan Islands. After the Buddy check was complete. We jumped in to the clear blue waters of Ko Bon. 20 minutes into the dive.
We came across our first manta. I held onto Patrik, because I knew he would lose concentration on his bouncy as the Manta came towards him. That was dive number Five. After the dive I explained how very lucky he was at seeing a Manta on his fifth dive. That I have known, many Instructors who have over 1000 dives and have never seen this amazing creature. Dive number six was at my favourite dive site, Ko Tachai. All was going well with the dive. Until i heard all the banging on the tanks. I looked up to see a 6 meter whale shark. Holy Mother of God – i said to myself in my thick Irish Accent. You lucky, lucky man Patrik. Not only did you see a Manta Ray but now you get to see a whale shark on your sixth dive. Some people have all the luck.. What a great days diving with had at the Similan Islands. A day i will never forget and neither will Patrik.
