Diving the similan Islands 2015
So far the Diving the Similan Islands has been 30 meters visibility. Whalesharks on Richelieu rock. Koh Tachai has been exceptional with most divers spotting Mantas on the second pinnacle. Ko Bon has had it’s far share of mantas but not as many sighting as on Koh Tachai. Island Number 8 has seen mantas as well. which is very unusual. Some company have decided to provide day trip dives to Shark fin reef which is great news as only liveaboards would normally dive this site. This gives more option to divers to explore the southern part of the Similan Islands. Some dive sites still suffer from coral bleaching but there are still so many things to discover on these dive sites. Bent ghost pipe fish, mating cuttle fist and my favourite Octopus. The most usual sighting last year has to be the sighting of a killer whale also know as an Orca on Ko Tachai. The Orca generally prefer colder waters, so to see one of the most powerful predator in these water was a very usual sighting. Especially when you consider their diet is seal and sea-lion and in some cases whales which are not native to these shores.
I personally think the marine life here on the Simlans Islands is changing from what it use to be, from the first time I came here. There are much more larger things to see because remember the these islands ten years ago were known for the smaller things like nude branches and sea-horse. Now we are getting much large pelagic fish inhabiting these waters.
So is the season 2014/2015 a good one? I think so, but let’s not forget it’s not over yet. Maybe the best as yet to come.
